Bike Tour FAQ's
Is this tour appropriate for children?
Yes! This bike tour is a wonderful way for kids comfortable on bikes to discover Rome. We only ask that your children have been riding for a while, are comfortable riding in a group, and can navigate riding a bike on various surfaces including cobbled streets.
Please keep in mind that children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.
- We have various sized city bikes to accommodate just about every size of rider, from extra small 20 inch wheeled bikes for riders that are 3.3ft (100cm) to extra large for riders up to 6.5ft (198cm).
- Unfortunately, we do not have tricycles, tandems, or bikes with training wheels for adults or children that may be less confident in their riding ability.
- Due to limited availability, please book 20” and 24” wheeled bikes in advance.
- Please Note: All extra small 20 inch and small 24 inch bikes are equipped with hand brakes.
Where is the meeting point?
This tour meets at our office, located at Via dei Delfini 35, Rome. We are about a 5 minute walk from Piazza Venezia.
What cycling skill level do I need for this tour?
While all of our tours maintain a leisurely pace, we want our guests to have fun and be safe, so being able to ride a bike is paramount.
Our Rome Bike Tour is perfect for intermediate bike riders. You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. Most of this tour is on roads and although we stick together as a group and carve out a lane for ourselves, we ask that all guests feel confident with their riding ability. The road surfaces in Rome vary and may include cobbled streets as well as smooth gravel and pavement.
Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety.
If you’re not sure how you’ll fare, we invite you to come to our office about 30 minutes prior to your tour start time to try the bikes.
What if I decide that I'd like to keep the bike longer?
You can choose to hold onto your bike for longer and just pay the difference when you return. Just be sure to note our seasonal opening hours and get in contact with us if you want to arrange a specific drop-off time. However we will ask that any kid’s bikes & equipment be brought back at the agreed upon time, as these items are in high demand for our tours.
What kind of bikes do you have?
We have 3-speed city bikes, so you’ll be upright and able to look around and enjoy the city. They of course come with fat tires so that you can take on the cobblestone streets in the old parts of town, and a luggage rack on the back where you can securely fasten small bags.
Do we go inside the museums and monuments?
Unfortunately, the tour duration does not give us enough time to enter any of the sites that we see on tour. This tour is designed to enjoy the city from a broad perspective and come away with a greater understanding of its history and layout.
I haven't been on a bike in years; will it be difficult?
While all of our tours maintain a leisurely pace, we want our guests to have fun and be safe, so being able to ride a bike is paramount. Ours is a very bike-friendly city and cars are used to sharing the road with cyclists and pedestrians.
We believe there is a tour for everyone, therefore each of our bike tours fall into one of the following categories, which you can find identified on the individual tour page:
Leisurely Cycling – Perfect for novice bike riders or those that haven’t been on a bike in years. You should have average balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. We will be riding on bike lanes, through parks, and occasionally with traffic. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety. If you’re not sure how you’ll fare, we invite you to come to our office about 30 minutes prior to your tour start time to try the bikes.
Intermediate Cycling – You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. Riders should be prepared for small hills, riding single-file behind other riders, and riding in a group. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety. If you’re not sure how you’ll fare, we invite you to try our Paris Day Bike tour first.
Athletic Cycling – Tours that fall under this category are by no means strenuous, but they cover a greater distance than our other tours and/or spend more time cycling in the roads than our other tours. You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. We vary between single-file & group riding. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety. We have children join us on tours at this level all the time so it completely depends on your confidence with a bicycle! If you’re not sure how you’ll fare with this level, we invite you to try our Paris Night Bike tour first.
Segway Tour FAQ's
What is a Segway?
The SegwayTM Human Transporter is the first of its kind-a self-balancing, personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. Easy to use and operate, the two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that automatically respond to your body’s movements, “sensing” when it should speed up and slow down.
You stand on a small platform between left and right wheels as you hold onto handlebars at a comfortable waist height. The Segway handles the balancing for you, so that you’re always upright as you glide through any environment.
You may also visit Segway LLC’s site for more detailed info.
If this is my first time to ride a Segway, will I be able to pick it up quickly?
Your safety is always our highest priority. Therefore, we begin each tour with a very thorough orientation of the Segway and its use before going out to enjoy the city
We’ve found that our guests pick up on how to ride a Segway within the first 10 minutes, but we like to take 20-30 minutes to explain the machines, demonstrate the best riding techniques, and then allow time to practice before heading out to see the sites. We like to ensure that every guest feels 100% confident before beginning the tour.
While riding a Segway is fairly leisurely, you will be on your feet for the duration of the tour.
My group size is larger than the dropdown menu allows, how can I book?
Please contact us at italy@fattiretours.com for larger group bookings. But please note that if the party is larger than 8 the group will be split up for safety reasons.
Are the Segways safe for people with disabilities?
We have had several people with disabilities join our tours. The necessary range of motion required to operate a Segway is similar to that of being able to transfer weight from one foot to another while walking. Also, riding a Segway does require the need to be able to stand for long periods of time. Each of our tours begins with a short safety video followed by time to practice in our training area across the street and instruction from your tour guide. We will practice on the Segways until everyone feels comfortable.
Can I rent a Segway without a guide?
Unfortunately, we cannot rent our Segways out to individuals without a guide. Since our tours are virtually always full, we need all machines for our tour customers.
My child is younger than 16 but has Segway experience. Can they ride?
Unfortunately, no. There are absolutely no exceptions to the law in Italy which requires all riders be at least 16 years old.
Skip-the-Line Tour FAQ's
Is this tour wheelchair or stroller accessible?

I have dietary restrictions/allergies. Can this tour be adapted?
The tour is adaptable for vegetarians, pescetarians, dairy-free, pregnant women, non-alcoholic options.
Unfortunately, we cannot adapt this tour for gluten free/celiac or vegan individuals.
What is the drinking age (for alcohol) in Italy?

This food tour does include a wine tasting at an authentic local wine shop.
