Unbelievable, but it’s almost been 25 years since the fateful and peaceful opening of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. To mark the 25th anniversary, Berlin has been hard at work coming up with a program that both reflects on the past but looks to how the city has evolved so dramatically in the last 25 years.
From November 7th until November 9th, 15 kilometers of the inner-city border formerly separating East Berlin and West Berlin will be marked by 1000 illuminated balloons. From the look of it these aren’t just your blow-up balloons, but an impressive set of installations.
If the 20th anniversary celebrations in 2009 are any indicator how Berlin will mark the occasion, this event should be a party not to be missed. Speakers in 2009 at the Brandenburg Gate included Angela Merkel, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Lech Wasela. A chain of giant Wall-sized foam “dominos” tipped, symbolically recreating the opening of the first border crossing at Bornerholmer Strasse back in 1989.
