David Bowie, the gender bending, boundary pushing, alter ego embracing, pop star has led a life so bizarre and spectacular you could fill a museum with his memorabilia. In fact, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London did just that and more than 300,000 people came to look at the artist’s retrospective exhibit. Now on its way around the world, the David Bowie exhibition will be on display until August 10th at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. The Berlin show will be one of the exhibit’s highlights since Bowie spent time in the city in the 1970s producing paintings and recordings that deeply influenced his career.
In 1976 Bowie moved to Schöneberg, where he shared an apartment with Iggy Pop, in what was then Western Berlin. Bowie began focusing on minimalist music and recorded three albums before leaving the city in 1979. The exhibit will highlight his time spent in Berlin but will also include other aspects of his career. Visitors will get a sensory experience through high tech multimedia displays and also see objects and memorabillia influential in Bowie’s life.
