In most cities, the size of the venue largely depends on the popularity of the artists – but this isn’t always the case in Paris. Some of the biggest names can be found in quaint, cozy concert halls. There are also a plethora of spots showcasing relatively unknown artists. Here’s a rundown of options if you’re looking for a fun, musical night out in Paris.
Le Trianon
This epic venue is worth the visit, if not only for the spectacular interior. Think Vaudeville and Edith Piaf – high ceilings decorated in ornate molding, opera-style seating and chandeliers. Bataclan
The Bataclan concert hall was originally built in 1864 using a Chinese-inspired style, and once held a café, theatre and dance hall. Following several changes in ownership, a stint as a cinema, then a fire in 1933, the Bataclan returned to its days as a “salle de spectacle.” Now, the intimate hall hosts some of the biggest names in hip-hop, rock, pop and world music. Fleche d’Or
This musical gem is actually a former train station. From 1867-1934, it served customers going between Paris and Calais, near the UK border. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the station was transformed into a café and concert hall, boasting everything from rock and pop to full on club nights. Now, the venue’s producers aim to make Fleche d’Or a place where new talent thrives. Stop by here for indie rock, reggae and folk music in a cool setting with a friendly, neighborhood vibe. New Morning
If you’re looking for jazz and blues, there’s no better place than this cozy spot. Such musical greats as Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Taj Mahal and Dizzie Gillespie have sung on the New Morning stage. Bob Dylan once made an appearance as well. Since opening its doors in 1981, the club has broadened its repertoire to include rap, hip-hop, gospel and Cuban beats. [More info]

La Bellevilloise
This uber-hip concert hall/community center/café/art exhibition hall was founded in 1877 as the first cooperative in Paris. Ownership of the space and the building itself have changed since then, but La Bellevilloise still retains its provincial feel. Small acts take the stage in the café, where tall, slim trees protrude from the mosaic tables, while the club offers awesome nights out with DJ sets and live acts. [More info]
